Tomb of Tallo Kings

MAKASSAR built from a small area called Tallo. In this region the body of the founder of Makassar lies. If you would like to go along and understand the importance of Makassar in the history of Indonesian archipelago civilization, came to Tallo.

Location of Object 
Kings Tallo tomb is located in the Tallo Village, Tallo Subdistrict in Makassar City, South Sulawesi, about six kilometers north of the central city of Makassar (Karebosi Field). 

Overview 
If not because of the existence of the tomb complex, people may not know that in the region had ever established the kingdom city, embryo of Makassar city. As generally old city, Tallo is located right in an estuary river named Tallo River, where the confluence of the river an Makassar Strait. 

Graves in the cemetery complex is generally having a 17th century character resembles temple buildings. Made of rock and bricks that glued one another. Totally area of the complex is one hectare. Fit as a shady garden because of many large and leafy trees. 

There are 78 graves in the complex. Contains the tomb of first King, grandson and his children. There are three types of graves. The first type is collated piles, made of blocking stones resembles a temple. Consists of legs, body, and hollowing roof. 

The second kind is a stone tablet, the tomb made as wood building consists of four rectangular board-shaped stone. The third type is the domed building, the tomb with hollow building and stood on the rectangular stone with a roof dome consists of four areas of flexion. 

Tomb of the king has a variety of ornaments, such as growing plants, lockets, letters of Arab, and lontara letter (typical writing of Bugis-Makassar). 

Approximately 200 meters southern of the tomb complex, there is Tallo Mosque. In this mosque for the first time Makassar people held a Friday pray on November 9, 1607, which is the momentum of standing of Makassar. This form of the mosque is no longer an ancient building because it has experienced several renovations. 

Access 
Location of the area is near to the toll gates of Sutami Highway and Port Highway. Make this site accessible from the Sultan Hasanuddin Airport and from the central city of Makassar. It easily reached by taxi or city transport called petepete.

HISTORY OF MAKASSAR CITY

Before 1460, the region now called Tallo was part of the Kingdom of Gowa region. At the time of 6th Gowa King, Tunatangka Lopi (1445-1460), the kingdom is divided into two, namely Gowa Kingdom and Tallo Kingdom. The separation occurred because Tunatangka Lopi have two children who want to have the same power. 

After Tunatangka Lopi died, Tuniawanga Ri Paralekkanna continue his father's throne as King of Gowa. Meanwhile, his brother, Karaeng Loe Ri holdings, became the first king of Tallo. During almost a century, the two kingdoms is running its own. 

When 9th Gowa King Daeng Matanre Karaeng Mangnguntungi or Tumapa'risi Kallona (1510-1546) was reign, these two kingdoms are united together again. Tallo region back into the Kingdom of Gowa. The capital of Gowa Kingdom was in Somba Opu Fortress. 

However, King Tallo retained the power over their own region as Mangkubumi (administrator). Constitution of Gowa formed in such a way so as not eliminate the power of Tallo King. Since that time, people often mentioned Gowa and Tallo together as the Kingdom of Makassar. 

Tallo role as a major seaport city of the kingdom of Gowa. Become a trading hub over Asia-Pacific regions together with Sunda Kelapa seaport in western Java. It happened before eventually subjected by VOC. The Dutch company successfully monopolized trading point in the archipelago. 

At the end of 16th century, Islam religion was entering to Sulawesi. Tallo Mangkubumi, I Mallingkang Daeng Manyonri Karaeng Katangka, was the first person embraced Islam. This step was followed by the 14th King of Gowa, I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia. Furthermore, the Kingdom of Gowa take the form of a sultanate and provided a degree to the king as Sultan Alauddin. He was the grandfather of Sultan Hasanuddin. 

On Friday, 9 November 1607, Tallo Mangkubumi held a Friday pray in Tallo Mosque. Islam has became the official religion of the Kingdom of Makassar (Gowa-Tallo). Where the mosque was the first Friday pray was held at this time still firmly stand. Of course, with several renovations. 

The historians in the South Sulawesi agreed, November 9, 1607 is the anniversary of Makassar. Meanwhile, the body of Tallo King and Mangkubumi buried in a complex, not far from the mosque where the first pray was held on Friday.(*)
