Pepe-pepeka Ri Makka Attraction

SOUND of typical music heard. Singer sings praise songs and prays to God. Meanwhile, the dancers dance and play fire attraction. Lit their bodies with fire but not burnt. That is the attraction of pepe-pepeka ri makka.

Pepe pepeka-ri Makka is a ritual dance to narrate the story of Prophet Ibrahim who was not burned by fire. Lyrics of the songs were the pray of the Prophet adopted into Makassar language from Arabic. Generally, this attraction will be held in guest reception.

Musical instruments consist of the drum, the typical violin shaped like a fiddle (stringed instrument of Arab), and trumpet. Singer is performing praise in his sing. Dancers consist of four up six people.

All pepe pepeka-ri Makka players wear custom cloth. While the music played and the song sung, the dancers bend contortion-in stage. They carry a short stick with fire. Then they lit fire to hand and body alternately.

The dancers are also often invite audiences to join attraction. Hands of the audience who up to the stage is spread and legs position astride. Then fire lit to the hands, feet, and all body. Uniquely, the audience feels fire that burned was not hot.

Pepe pepeka-ri Makka attraction is created by residents of Paroppo, Makassar. Today, many communities are already developing pepe pepeka-ri Makka arts so this is not only property of Paropo residents anymore, but become the property of all citizens.(*)
