Museum of Makassar

A two-storey building 17th century European-style firmly stands. That is the Museum of Makassar. In this building collect 560 historical objects that was recorded Makassar from period to period.


Location of Object
Museum of Makassar City located at Balaikota Street, only 500 meters from the center of Makassar, or about 25 kilometers from the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. 

Overview 
An old cannon directly welcome when the visitors come into the museum. Sprawling with his brown body. Made of iron and had more than 300 years. The ordnance used in Makassar War in 17th century. 

Inside the building, the atmosphere of Dutch colonial era will be felt immediately. Its walls are thick, wooden windows are wide, some hanging ornaments, all still intact. 

This old building built in 1916. Europe styled. Currently, the museum of Makassar store the historic collection, including objects of archaeological, heritage objects, photographs of Makassar in past, and a copy of the historical script. 

• Items archeology: Various motifs of stone found in Somba Opu Fortress such as circles, lines, geometric, spiral accounts, and curved lines mender.

• Cannon balls: Some cannon balls that ever shot when The Netherlands bombarded Somba Opu Fortress are still stored. 

• Ceramics: Japanese and Chinese ceramics, came from Ming Dynasty at 14-17 century, which brought by the Makassar sailors from it origin. 

• Pictures collection: Pictures of historic building. Some buildings are still survive until now and some has been destroyed. Pictures of Makassar voyager hunted for trepang in Australia in 1881 to 1907. Historical worship places pictures such as Malay Mosque, Cathedral Chuch, and Katangka Mosque. Pictures from Daeng Patompo, the Makassar former Mayor,. And Photos of other former Mayor of Makassar 

• Currency collection: The currency of the VOC (Indische verenidge Oost-compagnie), the Kingdom of Gowa currency, currency illustrated with Queen Wilhelmina and her statue. 

• Document collection: Map of Makassar, Bungaya Agreement between VOC and Sultan Hasanuddin, The Map Somba Opu Fortress

• Maula Art Gallery Collection: On the second floor of the museum, there Maula Art Gallery. This place stores various traditional crafts.

Tuesday-Thursday: 08.00-14.00 hrs 
Friday: 08.00-11.00 hrs 
Sunday: 08.00-14.00 hrs 
Saturday, Sunday, and holidays: closed 

Access 
Visitors can reach the Museum of Makassar with public transport, taxis, or hotel transport facilities. 

Rates 
Museum of Makassar not charge any rates for each visit.


HISTORY OF MUSEUM OF MAKASSAR

This building originally built as a government office in the Dutch colonialism era. After independence of Indonesian, this building ever used as a Hall of Makassar before finally moved to the Governor of Sulawesi former Building Office at Ahmad Yani Street. In 1999, the building was defined as museum by the Mayor of Makassar, Amiruddin Maula.

Museum of Makassar inaugurated on June 7, 2000. Currently, this building serves tourists and residents of Makassar which intends to history studies.(*)
